ROLE SUMMARY:
We are seeking a full-time Director of Architecture & Systems Engineering to lead a talented group of hardware, automation and instrument software engineers to guide the vision and value provided by Bluestem’s proprietary technology, Compass
The Director of Architecture & Systems Engineering will collaborate with management, production, and marketing staff to detail out product and project definition and specifications and be able to support all engineering systems As the lead in the team, you will help management structure software activities in the architecture pipeline which include prototyping next-gen experiences and technologies as well as profiling and benchmarking existing systems The analyses, insights and recommendations you provide will have a large impact on Bluestem’s product portfolio and help shape many commercial aspects of the business We are looking for a highly energized person who wants to tackle big problems, in a collaborative environment
This role reports directly to the VP of Platform
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides leadership in employing an interdisciplinary approach and applies the elements of systems engineering discipline to enable the realization of successful systems
- Integrates/modifies technical requirements within program constraints to develop high level system solutions
- Analyzes requirements Identifies concepts, architectural solutions, and system design to meet program needs (technical, schedule, budget, product cost)
- Identifies use-cases, hazards, and develops mitigations
- Derives subsystem requirements linked to systems requirements
- Directs and controls the integration of hardware and software, and verifies the operation of subsystems and systems by developing and executing appropriate tests and analyses
- Leads efforts on evaluation of system performance with respect to requirements and organizes reviews that form the basis of phase gate deliverables for the PRP phases
- Leads cross functional efforts to identify root cause and develops system level solutions for a wide variety of product and systems challenges
- Models the life and reliability of systems/ products against requirements
- Provides systems engineering support to develop and evaluate the production specification
- Provides mentorship to lower level engineers
- Recruit, hire and supervise additional scientific staff as required
- Keep up to date with latest advancements and publicly available databases/tools for synthetic biology and biomanufacturing applications
Requirements
- Required Skills: Architectural Design, System Administration, Software Selection, System Implementation and Management
- Bachelor’s Degree required from an accredited college or university in a related field
- Design and develop solutions to complex applications problems, systems administration issues, or network concerns
- Perform systems management and integration functions
- Communicate with staff or clients to understand specific system requirements
- Collaborate with others to determine design specification or details
- Provide advice on project costs, design concepts, or design changes
- Recommend changes to improve computer or information systems
- Collaborate with engineers, software developers, business analysts to select appropriate design solutions or ensure the compatibility of system components
- Evaluate current or emerging technologies to consider cost, portability, compatibility or usability
- Identify system data, hardware, or software components required to meet user needs
- Develop guidelines for system implementation
- Assist with business development activities, such as proposals, capture, account teams, whitepapers, conferences, and/or other thought leadership materials
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal and ability to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment (start-up!)
- Self-starter and ability to lead projects, build relationships and be a vocal representative of the companyWorking knowledge of available computational tools, capabilities and strategies
- Organizational agility and the ability to show collaboration and interest across the organization to bring together multi-disciplines and synthesize for external communications

Bluestem is excited to offer a remote-first working model. Team members can work primarily remotely. Conditions permitting, teams will meet in person every quarter or two at Bluestem’s hub, in Omaha, NE.
