Sr. Scientist, Metabolic Engineering

Bluestem Biosciences, Inc., is designing biology with the end in mind, to enable existing infrastructure in the Midwest for industrial biotechnology. We are leveraging digital biology to facilitate discovery for biomanufacturing, focused on the sustainable production of chemicals and materials.

ROLE SUMMARY:
We are seeking a full-time Metabolic Engineer to join Bluestem’s top-talented scientific team. Ideal candidates will be experts in pathway design and engineering. Additionally, they will have a strong understanding of protein design and improvement techniques/methodologies. This role will be interacting with our computational team, as well as our external research partners to facilitate a continually optimized approach to discovery. 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Construct, test, and optimize (both in-silico, and with external research partners) de novo biosynthetic pathways
  • Use knowledge of microbial physiology, metabolism, and biochemistry to continually optimize productivity (yields, titer) of engineered strains and predictive models
  • Experience with high throughput screening techniques and assay development 
  • Perform modeling and omics  data-driven analysis in support of multiple projects.
  • Stay up-to-date with latest research and computational tools relevant to metabolic engineering 

REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Ph.D. in Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry or related field  with 3+ years of industry  or academic (post-doc) experience in bacterial metabolic engineering
  • Deep knowledge of computational pathway design tools and underlying mechanics
  • Extensive knowledge of microbial physiology
  • Hands on experience working with genetic engineering tools such as cloning, pathway assembly and chromosomal manipulation
  • Track record for applied use of synthetic biology tools in industrially relevant microbial hosts.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal and ability to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment (start-up!)
  • Self-starter and ability to lead projects, build relationships and be a vocal representative of the company
  • Working knowledge of available computational tools, capabilities and strategies
  • Organizational agility and the ability to show collaboration and interest across the organization to bring together multi-disciplines and synthesize for external communications

Bluestem is excited to offer a remote-first working model. Team members can work primarily remotely.
